The extensive exhibition mostly covers the back story of Pixar – how the movies are conceived, what goes on behind the final polished products we see on the big screens. It’s like an animation artist’s dream come true.
I must say that I’m very impressed with Science Centre‘s constant effort to organise and bring in such awesome exhibitions. And I’m also very honored that A/Professor Lim Tit Meng, CEO of Science Centre, was there in person to welcome us.
There are two highlights within the exhibition that are so awesome, you’ll have to be there yourself to witness the magic.
First up, the Zoetrope. If you are like me, who had learnt about zoetropes before, you would expect it to be something like the photo on its Wikipedia page. Little did I expect Pixar’s version to be this mind-boggling 3D illusion!
Here’s a little preview of how it looks in real:
The still figurines appear to have a life of their own! Trust me, you would want to see it for yourself. While at the exhibition, I actually went back to the zoetrope a few times just to look at how awesome it is.
The second highlight is the Artscape. And once again, it is impossible to show you the beauty of watching it live at the exhibition.
The elongated screen is projected by four projectors, and the visual being so huge, it makes the audience feel like they are part of the 11-minute animation. Together with the surrounding audio, it is an experience that the Pixar guys described as “what it feels like to be part of Pixar”.
I’m also very fascinated by the artworks, sketches and the preparatory works that are being showcased.
The colourscript for Monsters, Inc.
The storyboard of the hilarious Pixar short, For the Birds.
Detailed studies for A Bug’s Life – My favourite Pixar movie!
“Movement studies” of Boo, the little girl from Monsters, Inc.!
And of course, photography is not allowed. We were granted special permission under “credentialed media”.
As a form of respect to the artists, I tried to take as little photos as possible too. These that appeared on my blog are just a few out of the 500 over sketches, paintings, sculptures and digital installations.
Random camwhore photos to end the blog entry with! Anyhoo, the exhibition only until 27 June and it’s the last stop in Asia, so don’t miss it! Highly recommended if you’re a Pixar fan, or a budding animator/creative!
while ago, Esther got me to help her to take some photos for advertorial purpose. The photos turned out better than I’d expected. But although I thought the photos were great, constructive criticism is always welcome for me to get better.
You might have already seen most of the photos on Esther’s blog, but those that she posted up were her edit from the raw photos. So without further ado, here’s mine!
Anyway thanks to Fabian, who helped us out a lot during the photoshoot!
an’t believe I took so long to continue blogging about this trip that happened months ago! Hell, the last update was a month ago! But rest assured that more regular blog posts are going to be up as I’m ORD-ing VERY SOON!
You have been warned that this is going to be a long and photo-intensive entry!
So after day one, we got up early the next day to set off for Langkawi’s waterfall!
Looking grumpy because the weather was getting hotter by the minute.
Notice how we were actually in the wrong attire; Who goes on a jungle trail in flip-flops?! And the thing is we weren’t even sure if we were heading in the correct direction, we merely followed any path that leads upwards and the sound of water.
Then we walked into this secluded place with blank billboards sparsely located along the trail. We had been walking for so long and there was no sign that we were getting anywhere near the waterfall, that it was going to look like a bad lost-in-the-jungle movie.
Lugging my camera and one-litre bottles of water along adds to the exhausting way up the steep path. We were halfway up there when we decided that we were going in the wrong direction. Lian went forward to check what was ahead of us while we took a break at the steps, and true enough, there was only an electric generator up there.
It was truly a FML scenario when we finally found our way out of the jungle and realised we were walking in the wrong direction for the past 45 minutes!
So far, all the photos taken with my camera do not have me inside as I was the one photographing. It’s like I’m writing a story about these three guys on their arduous journey to the top of the jungle. Sigh, story of my life.
AND WE FINALLY MADE IT TO THE TOP!
But it was Seven Wells that is located at the top instead, not the waterfall. It is this low rising slope with different pools of water flowing from one to another.
After some frolicking in the clear water, we headed our way down to the waterfall. And you have no idea how disappointed I was when I found out how pathetic the waterfall is.
It was only this small stream of water and we can’t even get to the bottom of the waterfall because it looked too dangerous to do so. The best we could do was to take photos near the bottom of it.
After the grueling journey up to Seven Wells and the waterfall, we went back to the hotel to change, and headed for massage, dinner and pubbing – which, I didn’t bring my camera along! So no photos until the next day!
Started day two with a scrumptious seafood brunch!
Oh yeah, we bought ‘island-hopping’ packages for the day’s activity!
The weather was darn hot and the sun was extremely scorching, so we sat along the shade like ah peks while waiting for the bus to pick us up to the jetty.
Made friends with this angmoh lady and her friend who sat behind us on the boat and she was coincidentally working in Singapore!
The islands were filled with these monkeys. They were aiming for our plastic bags and bottles the moment we stepped onto the island.
And this looked like a scene you might find outside clubs in Singapore:
That’s Lian with his model dream. LOL!
Didn’t get to parasail because they quoted us around SGD$50 for a 10 min ride! Too ex lah!
Island-hopping was rather fun albeit having only spent a short time on each island! After the activity ended, we headed to Kua town (Langwaki’s “city” area) for dinner and to change to our next hotel.
The place was quite a disappointment because it was pretty much a dead town. But we had quite an amusing encounter during dinner.
We didn’t know where to eat, so we randomly asked an uncle for recommendations. Turned out, he is probably the richest man in Langkawi.
While walking us to this particular restaurant that he said was good, he literally waved to the owners of every shop we past. We thought he was just very friendly until he whipped out his namecard and said that we can get a discount at most of the shops over there just by mentioning his name.
True enough, our dinner was heavily discounted!
Went around the shops and I found my long lost love – Vanilla Coke!
Bought beer and crackers, and we went back to our homely looking condo apartment to unwind.
And the day ended with me camwhoring while waiting for my turn to bathe!
The last day we went to the jetty to sight-see and take photos.
Jump shot FAIL:
Yay nice one!
Went back to the condo apartment shortly after and packed for home!
I was worrying at first if it would have a heavy storyline like some other sappy romance films, but I was proven wrong by the characters that are easy to connect, and the melodramatic story that is somewhat predictable but convincing enough to let you relate to the characters.
It was definitely a feel-good movie, but little did I expect it to be a tearjerker too. It also has funny moments that cracks you up!
The movie centers on a troubled teenage girl, Ronnie, who is pretty much bitter about every other thing in her life. But underneath the emo look, she is a very smart and kind-hearted girl and a piano prodigy who stopped playing out of spite.
Along with her animated little brother, they were sent to stay with her divorced (hence the spite) father for the summer where she meets this dreamy stud and falls in love with.
I especially liked how Ronnie changed from this angsty teenage girl to slowly opening up to her father and eventually reconnecting with him before everything becomes too late.
I think I actually became a fan of Miley Cyrus after seeing how she is able to portray this character that is a total opposite of what we known her as. This edgy role lets us see how versatile she can be.
Apart from Miley, I’m also very impressed with Bobby Coleman’s – who played Ronnie’s little brother – acting. In the second half of the movie when the drama picks up, this little boy will be able to touch your heart and make you tear with him.
This romance movie is a definitely must-watch for all those teenage girls (or even cougars), judging from the giggles whenever the local hunk (Liam Hemsworth) in story appears onscreen – topless or not. Even him putting down a chair to sit beside Ronnie made the crowd chuckled effortlessly.
Oh, the music played a good role in the emotional scenes. And I liked the take-home message: “Everybody makes mistakes. Even the ones we love.”
Do catch in the cinemas soon! Btw, I’ve “liked” Disney Studio Singapore Facebook page, have you? http://pea.to/dtls
Although my busy schedule doesn’t really allow it, I’m still very much a movie junkie! I always try to make time for any feel-good movies that are worth the effort to take time off to catch.
Well, this time round, I’m definitely gonna catch Disney’s upcoming movie, “The Last Song”. Starring Miley Cyrus, it is based on novel by Nicholas Sparks.
To not spoil it for you, here’s a description of the movie in a nutshell:
